After school I emailed one of my parents about her daughter, Social Butterfly. I just wanted to give her an update on her spelling and how she is doing.
This child has struggled a bit with the spelling and there are family problems occuring. Butterfly has her moments, but really tries hard. I emailed her mom letting her know that she got all 20 words right on her spelling test. I also let her know how much Butterfly has been honest about things lately.
Her mom replied saying this was the best news she had all week.
That reply totally made my week.
One of my other students, Hawaii (no not real name, that's where she's from though), has really worked hard this week. I moved their seats last week and she has been answering questions right and left and really impressed met his week. Hawaii's mom is a bit intimidating at times. I let her know yesterday how well she has been doing this week and then today how fantastic she did on spelling (she too has REALLY struggled with spelling)- she got a 102% today! Her mom was so excited and thanked me for letting her know how well she was doing.
I was surprised and just so proud of Hawaii!
Small surprsies. Those are the best!

Open Mouth, Insert Foot
Do you ever feel like you have a permanent sign on you that says, "Any moment mouth is open, foot will be inserted."?
At least 2 times today I did this.
The first was at the dentist. Oy. I can't even talk about how stupid I felt. I can't even repeat what I said because it was one of those moments where as soon as I finished saying what I said, I was thinking "Crap. Why the F did I say that??"
The other was just a few moments ago with one of my friends. She called to ask me if I'm doing anything on Friday. (I'm not.) She said that since I'm not, she's setting me up with someone she knows from her church and I have to dress up and look nice. Everyone always claims they want to set me up. They never do. So I was a bit surprised. And I had been thinking about something else all day:
One of my other friends who is pregnant with her first baby was supposed to find out if it is a boy or girl today. She promised she would call me today; that I was at the top of her list. The appointment was at 10:30 a.m. It's almost 6 p.m. This must be one Fing long list.
I asked the friend that called if she had heard from Pregnant Friend. Nope. I explained. She tried to rationalise why P.F. hadn't called, but even as she tried, I could hear the irritation in her voice. I immediately felt bad, but didn't, and still really don't, know what to say. She was cutting out and difficult to hear, so that didn't help either.
I suppose I'll just apologize. That's probably the best thing to do.
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. A lot of my mom's family will be over to the parental's house tomorrow. A few I haven't seen in about 2 or 3 years! It is sure to be filled with lots of drama (and me putting my foot in my mouth)!
Happy Thanksgiving!
